This week I visited Homestead to conduct Congressional oversight. It was not my first time visiting and it will not be my last - until this facility is shut down, and every kid there is placed with eligible sponsors or moved to non-restrictive, licensed community-based residential facilities.
|
After our visit we held a press conference to discuss what we saw at Homestead. |
|
I want to share some key points from my visit with you:
- We asked about how much information the Office of Refugee Resettlement is sharing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security, that DHS could use to engage in enforcement action about potential sponsors for kids at Homestead - and didn't get a clear answer.
I will follow up on every single question this administration has left unanswered, fight for immigrant youth, and push for this facility to be closed.
Yazmin Juárez testifying before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform |
Our country failed Yazmin Juárez.
She came to the United States seeking asylum with her 19-month-old daughter Mariee.
Her daughter's illness was neglected while they were detained by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Mariee died six weeks after leaving ICE custody.
My heart broke listening to Ms. Juárez's testimony at the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. And I am deeply concerned that the medical records for her daughter, who died after being detained by ICE, appear to have been fabricated.
ICE cannot just make up records to cover their neglect.
I will keep holding this Administration accountable. It is an honor to represent you in Washington.
Sincerely,
Debbie Wasserman Schultz
Member of Congress
