Dems Send GOP Leadership A Message On Gun Safety

MIAMI (CBSMiami) —  Four years ago Megan Hobson was the victim of a drive-by shooting.

“That night the bullet that hit me entered through the bumper, then the trunk and the backseat and entered through my right pelvis, shattering my hip bone and tearing up my right intestine,” said Hobson. “The car was riddled with bullets from an AK-47 rifle. Why is an AK-47 weapon of war on our streets?”

On Tuesday, Megan joined Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Congressman Ted Deutch, local law-enforcement and gun safety advocates to send the Republican leadership a message on gun safety nearly a month since the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

“In the wake of Orlando, Speaker Paul Ryan’s cowardly action, we are gathered here with heavy hearts to urge the utmost importance for action,” said Wasserman Schultz.

Two weeks ago, House Democrats staged a 26-hour sitting over gun control asking Republicans to vote on the measure.

“Expanding background checks, if you want to buy a gun and to make sure you were not on the terrorism watch list,” said Wasserman Schultz.

It’s a bill they hope will hit the floor for the safety of the American people.

“Whether you’re gay, straight, black, white, it doesn’t mean you are less of a victim. That night they said I was a victim of gang retaliation and I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Where is the right place,” said Hobson.

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz and Congressman Deutch went back to Washington to deliver their message with nine legislative days left until summer recess.
