So today – on a long Labor-won weekend – let’s honor all those who sacrificed their time, strength and lives on picket lines and in union halls. More important, let’s join our fellow workers in the fight for the safety and benefits all workers deserve.

All Americans owe so much to the brave union sisters and brothers who organized, fought and died for a better life. That reality is all the more apparent in the age of Coronavirus. Be it in hospitals, airports, grocery stores or our neighborhood restaurants and post offices, union workers are carrying the often dangerous extra weight during this pandemic.

On Labor Day we thank them and all frontline workers who commit and risk themselves to their jobs in service of their nation and their families.

We must also recognize that beyond the COVID-19 crisis, it is still this nation’s union members who lead on so many other urgent battlefronts of justice, from better pay, health care access and paid family leave, to an economy built on an equitable and sustainable environmental future. It’s no coincidence that a relative drop-off in union membership tracks with the growth in income inequality.
