THE HILL Top Dem rep: Republicans are 'running and hiding' By Rebecca Savransky Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) early Thursday slammed Republicans for refusing the hold a vote on gun control legislation. "They have to put the bill on the floor and own up to where they are and stare their constituents in the eye and say 'yay' or 'nay,' " she said Thursday morning on "CBS This Morning." "That's what we're elected to do. But they're running and hiding because of the NRA." The Florida representative said members of Congress have stood on the floor and asked for moments of silence after mass shootings across the country. "Thoughts and prayers aren't good enough anymore," Wasserman Schultz said. "We have to act. We have an obligation to make sure that the legacy of those children who were killed is honored." The Democrats, who staged a sit-in on the House floor beginning Wednesday, plan to hold the floor until they get a vote, she said. "It is a cowardly act that they have not at least allowed a vote," she said. "We will continue to shine a spotlight on this issue, the fact that the Republicans in the majority will not allow a vote on bills that would simply say, 'If you are suspected of terrorism. If you are on the terrorist watch list, if you are on the no fly list in this country, then you should not be able to buy a gun.' " Republicans can vote however they want on the legislation, she said, but they need to hold a vote. "They need to do their jobs and face the music," she said, "and stop cowering in the corner because of their fear of the NRA and their retribution." |
