Wasserman Schultz Commends Biden-Harris Admin's Forceful Response to Maduro Regime's Election Theft

“Nearly a year ago today, I proudly introduced the VOICE Act to impose sanctions on Venezuelan officials responsible for election interference, corruption, and attacks on Venezuela's democratic opposition, including the ban on María Corina Machado's presidential candidacy.

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), co-chair of the Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus, released the following statement on the Biden-Harris administration’s sanctions on key actors in Maduro’s election theft in Venezuela:

“Nearly a year ago today, I proudly introduced the VOICE Act to impose sanctions on Venezuelan officials responsible for election interference, corruption, and attacks on Venezuela's democratic opposition, including the ban on María Corina Machado's presidential candidacy. Today, I am grateful that the Biden-Harris Administration is taking decisive action to implement key components of my bill by targeting criminal actors in the regime who have facilitated Maduro's election theft and violent repression of his own people.

“These designations are a critical step to amplify international pressure on the Maduro regime to face the facts: Edmundo González won in a landslide and the Venezuelan people deserve to have their votes counted and their rights respected.

“As Vice President Harris stated in her letter to Ms. Machado and Mr. González, the United States 'will remain steadfast with the Venezuelan people in their fight for freedom'. We must continue to rally the free world in support of democracy, stringently enforce existing sanctions on Venezuelan oil and gas, and ensure swift, sweeping consequences for dictators like Maduro who thrive on impunity and apathy.”
