Wasserman Schultz Hosts Broward County Leaders at Briefing on Trump’s Big Ugly Law, Executive Orders, and Florida Budget Cuts

“Few laws will inflict as much harm on our community as the Big Ugly Bill that Republicans just passed. The massive tax breaks for the wealthiest, most fortunate Americans by stealing resources from working families and pushing it right into the pockets of the very wealthy – is simply cruel and grotesque,” said Wasserman Schultz. “If you’re a middle-class family, all those promises Trump made about tax breaks and additional benefits are a lie.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) led an urgent public briefing at the Broward County Governmental Center to highlight the impacts of the Big Ugly Bill, other federal and state budget cuts, and recent Trump Executive Orders. Wasserman Schultz was be joined by U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20), State Representatives Marie Woodson (D-105), Robin Bartleman (D-103) and Daryl Campbell (D-99), as well as Broward County Mayor Beam Furr.

Broward County residents who gave testimony at the briefing included UNITE HERE General Vice President Wendi Walsh, AFGE Local 2014 Executive Vice President Yanick Larose, SEIU 32BJ Florida Director Helene O’Brien, Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco, Feeding South Florida President/CEO Paco Velez, Pride Center at Equality Park CEO Robert Boo, Alliance for Retired Americans Senior Advocate Ken Goodfriend, Affordable Care Act Recipient Bonnie Kaufman, and Former Director of the Hurricane Research Division at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic Meteorological Laboratory Dr. Frank Marks.

President Trump and the Republicans’ Big Ugly Law is a billionaire bailout that adversely affects families, kids, seniors and veterans. The wealthiest 20 percent get over 60 percent of its tax breaks, which are partly paid for by taking healthcare coverage and food help away from working families. It guts Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act by more than $1 trillion, and 17 million Americans will lose their health insurance, and increases the deficit by $3.4 trillion.
