"We are seriously concerned about the future treatment of immigrants at this facility. It is also important that we uplift grave concerns over the environmental and tribal impacts of your decision.”
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) announced she led U.S. House of Representatives Florida Democratic Members to demand Governor Ron DeSantis abandon plans to build an ICE detention facility on sacred tribal land in the Everglades. “We strongly and unequivocally oppose the construction of a temporary immigration detention facility at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport site dubbed sarcastically as ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ in the heart of the Everglades,” said the Members. “We are seriously concerned about the future treatment of immigrants at this facility. It is also important that we uplift grave concerns over the environmental and tribal impacts of your decision.” Other signers include Reps. Darren Soto (FL-09), Lois Frankel (FL-27), Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-21) Frederica Wilson (FL-24), Kathy Castor (FL-14), and Maxwell Frost (FL-10). The full letter can be found here. |
